I have worked
with MariMikel Penn for several years. She has sent me patients
for ultrasound consultations, as well as obstetrical patients with
complications requiring M.D. management. In my experience she has
used excellent clinical judgment.

MariMikel Penn has our enthusiastic recommendation, endorsement, and support for her outstanding work as a midwife. During the 15 years that Kristin and I have known MariMikel , we have come to have the highest confidence in her abilities. MariMikel has helped all four of our children come into the world. In every case she demonstrated an exceptional level of personal and professional commitment. She was attentive to our needs both as persons and as prospective parents. She communicated a deep and sincere concern for our questions, our hoes, and our needs. In each of our four births minor difficulties arose. MariMikel responded to every contingency in a calm, confident and professional manner. Her quick and capable actions resolved every situation successfully, preventing minor difficulties from possibly escalating into more serious problems. For our part we knew what to do and how to work with her because of the thorough preparation MariMikel had provided during birth classes, pre-natal exams and home visits. For the last 10 years MariMikel has been a member of the congregation where I serve as minister, Bluebonnet Hills Christian Church. I have watched her grow spiritually, and I know how deep her commitment is to the vocation to which she feels God has called her. When a husband and father is expecting the birth of a child, he knows that two of the most precious persons in his world--his wife and his newborn baby-- will be going through a critical time. When I approach such a time I want the best possible support, both spiritually and professionally. The highest recommendation I can think of for MariMikel is to say that there is no one I would rather have caring for my wife and my child. Yours sincerely, Landon T. Shultz, PhD |

BEE CAVES August 14, 1995 To Whom it May Concern: I am a pediatrician and have been in private practice in Austin, Texas since 1978. Throughout most of these years, I have had the opportunity to work with a local area midwife by the name of MariMikel Penn. I have worked with her on a consistent basis and am well aware of her clinical qualifications, as well as her protocols for the management of pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the initial care of the newborn infant. I have been totally impressed by MariMikel’s knowledge of the appropriate management of pregnancy. Her instructional program for expectant parents (childbirth classes, written materials) are top-notch Her clinical skills in the management of pregnancy are excellent and include the appropriate screening and diagnostic tests. She readily seeks obstetrical opinions from her backup physicians, and follows their recommendations. I have helped her on numerous occasions with information concerning the appropriate management of pregnancy from the infant’s standpoint, as this is my expertise. She absolutely has the knowledge and the skills and the communication network for this important aspect of midwifery. In addition, MariMikel has excellent clinical skills and experience in assisting the birth of the newborn. High risk situations are appropriately referred prior to labor, and unexpected situations are managed appropriately and expeditiously. We are blessed in our city with a rapid referral situation for emergency delivery backup, and, in fact, a cesarean section can be arranged via transport from home to our fully staffed hospital and accomplished significantly faster than in most small community hospitals where the physicians (obstetrician, anesthesiologist, neonatologist) are not generally all available in house. My main experience, however, with MariMikel is in regards to the newborns. I am impressed by her intense "on the job" availability in the home. She is not only available for the delivery, but follows the newborn’s status as well as that of the new mother. Breast feeding technique, care of the newborn infant, and important "red flags" signaling newborn problems are taught. I find that our new mother’s are much better equipped to handle their newborn than those who deliver in the hospital system. I have been appropriately consulted when concerns are present, and if there is a problem, appropriate referral is made for hospitalization In addition, I also have a somewhat deeper knowledge into MariMikel’s character. I have been her children’s pediatrician throughout all these years, as well as having socialized with her on numerous occasions. She is a caring, honest, intelligent, and real asset to the community. I wish we had more midwives like her in our city and she provides a valuable service for those parents desiring a natural childbirth. If I were to have another child, I would have no qualms in having her assist in the birth of my own child. Sincerely, |
